Clothes Don’t work That Way: When alternate Covers Are much better

Aftershock Comics has a new title coming out April 5 called Eleanor & the Egret. It’s written (and lettered) by John Layman (Chew, Stephen Colbert’s Tek Jansen) as well as illustrated by Sam Kieth (The Maxx), as well as it’s about an art thief gone along with by a giant bird. Here’s the description:

A somewhat surreal tale of an art thief as well as her sidekick, a speaking egret who gets just a bit bigger after each successful caper, as they embark on a escalating series of daring thefts of world-famous paintings as well as dodge pursuers in an progressively weirdly dangerous game of cat-and-mouse.

Here’s the primary cover to problem #1, by Kieth.

The very first thing that struck me was, of what seems like it may be an historical story (and provided that hat), that gown is ridiculous. The part that stands out is where it’s tight sufficient to suggest a belly button! It doesn’t bode well for a comic I want to read, either, since exactly how can a visitor focus on story when the artist wishes to draw interest to people’s bodies with skintight costumes?

The 1 in 10 variant cover, by Elizabeth Torque, is more inspiring as well as to my eye, provides a bit more concept of the concept. however fewer people will see it, as well as it will be more costly to own. Shame.

Layman was quoted as saying:

“I’m proud to be part of the AfterShock family, as well as grateful they are getting behind Sam as well as I for this extremely unique as well as off-kilter book. I would explain Eleanor & the Egret as a fable, as well as a surrealist romance, however it’s most likely more quickly referred to as something NOT quickly describable. It’s a melding of two unique voices to comics. It’s likewise just an reason for me to provide Sam awesome stuff to draw, and, in that, he’s exceeding all expectations — a few of the pages he’s turning in are absolutely breathtaking.”
